The Association des Veuves du Genocide Agahozo (AVEGA) is a women-led and women’s rights organization founded in Rwanda following the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and officially recognized in 1995. It was established by widows of the Genocide to address its consequences. There were many mental health issues resulting from the Genocide, many women were raped and infected with HIV, justice issues arose, and there were many orphans with no shelters. Through the remarkable achievements of resilience, healing, tolerance, and unity among its members, the organization expanded its support from solely serving Genocide survivors to also aiding the general population through its health facilities and programs. At its core, AVEGA remains committed to addressing the diverse challenges faced by its members and beneficiaries, including physical disabilities, HIV/AIDS, and enduring trauma. Through comprehensive and sustainable programs, AVEGA continues to nurture resilience, empower its community, and ensure that the legacy of the Genocide is honored while survivors receive the ongoing support needed to thrive.
